Man breaks 'toughest' Atlantic solo rowing record

A 26-year-old man from Surrey has broken the record for the fastest solo Atlantic crossing.

Andrew Brown took 40 days to row 2,936 miles from Tenerife to Barbados in a 19ft (5.7m) boat.

He was taking part in the Atlantic Challenge, billed as the world's toughest rowing race, and was raising money for two UK children's charities.

Andrew Brown says it feels amazing to have finished the challenge and to have broken a record at the same time.

"I don't think the feeling has quite sunk in yet," he admitted.

"I thought perhaps the record was on from about the 15th day onwards if the conditions carried on.

"Even though I've had it in mind for such a long time, now it's actually happened I can't really believe it."

Emmanuel Coindre from France had held the record for the fastest solo Atlantic crossing since 2004.

Organisers say more people have travelled to space than have rowed across the Atlantic.

Power problems

Andrew Brown, who works in the toy industry, was narrowly beaten in the race by a pairs team.

Toby Iles and Nick Moore arrived in Port St Charles, Barbados, around half an hour before Brown.

They missed out on breaking the course record for a pair.

Other contestants were disqualified after calling for help - the rules of the race ban external assistance.Seventeen crews started the race on 5 December but eight have pulled out because of problems including poor weather and sea-sickness.

Two rowers, Tom Fancett and Tom Sauer, were rescued by a cruise ship when their boat capsized after being hit by a massive wave before Christmas.

Another team that includes four veterans who lost limbs in Iraq and Afghanistan, Row2Recovery, has had to take on emergency water supplies and also has a broken rudder.

Andrew Brown admits he had his own issues to contend with on the crossing including a serious power problem.

"Everything on the boat was powered by solar panels and for the first two weeks we didn't have much sunshine," he said.

"I became really tight on electricity, which I needed to make water.

"I was having to be really careful about how much I drank, which, when you're doing that much exercise isn't what you're wanting to be doing."

As well as power problems including a battery which needed to be fixed and regular storms, the 26-year-old also had to contend with salt rash, blisters and cramps.

His first meal on arriving in Barbados was a burger and chips.

Andrew Brown says he will return to the UK next Monday (23 January) after recovering in Barbados with his girlfriend.

The year of the Dragon is seen by the Chinese as a fortunate and lucky year, a prosperous year for all intending on starting up new ideas companies and businesses. Well lets face it, we can probably rely on this advice as much as we can any banker, financial expert and so on. Who really does know, with Iran now forcing the hand of the west, we could even be looking at another war, stretching the Europeans budgets into a deeper recession. Even the hint of problems from Iran has hiked oil prices, which we were told only weeks ago could push the world into a deeper recession than we have already seen. Tenerife, is certainly feeling the brute force of the economy, but what do the parliamentary powers do about it. If you visit Los Gigantes, you will see their approach was to force bar owners and local businesses to abide by rules, taking away valuable tables from unused walkways, and kerbing advertising on the streets. They must have some logic behind this move, even music bars and entertainment bars are being harassed by Police to close on time and cut volume levels. Los Cristianos seems to be bustling in the day times, but the approach of many fully inclusive resorts now hits the local businesses hard, and tourists are just not spending.

My approach for 2012 is to stop watching the news, stop listening to the 100´s of "specialists" I see on Sky news, and to just get on with a smile on my face. It seems many people can be talked into recession, businesses can be scared into closing, and customers can feel a sense of doom and gloom before they even act.

Booking holidays in Tenerife is a great choice for beach breaks, but there is no reason why you should not enjoy a little authentic Spain while you are there.

Most of the resorts on the island have everything you could possibly need for a lazy break in the sun - cheap accommodation, low-cost bars and restaurants, great beaches and plenty of nightlife.

Tenerife's capital Santa Cruz can offer all of that, but it has still managed to retain the authentic feel of one of the big cities on the Spanish mainland thanks to its cultural and historic attractions.

It makes a perfect base for cheap all inclusive holidays in Tenerife, as you will be able to enjoy real variety during your break. But, even if you select another resort, it is well worth taking a day trip to Santa Cruz.

The historic quarter situated in the area around the port is likely to be your starting point when exploring Santa Cruz. You will discover a number of grand squares and lots of traditional houses here, along with the pretty 16th century church of the Iglesia de la Concepcion.

Another building you will also want to visit is the imposing Castillo Negro, which holds regular re-enactments of the Battle of Santa Cruz, which saw Lord Nelson's fleet defeated by Spanish naval forces in 1797. The city's other castle, the Castillo de San Cristobal, is now a military museum that counts Nelson's tiger canon as its star exhibit.

The Santa Cruz area has one of Tenerife's best beaches in the form of Playa de Las Teresitas, but it is far from the only place to enjoy the outdoors in the city. The botanical gardens at the Palmetum of Santa Cruz de Tenerife are a perfect place to take a stroll, while you may also enjoy a walk through the formal gardens, fountains and statues at Parque Garcia Sanabria.

Tenerife's capital is one of the best places to sample traditional Canarian cuisine. In the small restaurants in the back streets favoured by the locals, you will be able to tuck into shark, rabbit and rich stews, and wash the meal down with a bottle of local wine.

The largest cruise ship in Europe docks for the first time in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in Spain was graced today with the first visit of Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in Europe. Liberty has come to the Island from Miami as a stopover before the start of its summer season in the Mediterranean.

A statement released by the Port Authority ensures that the ship is two inches longer than its sister ship, Independence of the Seas, which is 339 feet long and 154,407 gross registered tons, with capacity to 4,375 cruisers.

Liberty of the Seas is served by 1,300 crew, 730 of them dedicated to ensuring safety on board.

The ship, built in Finland in 2007 at a cost of $ 800 million, remain in port until 18:00 pm and depart in the direction of Cadiz to continue to cover a voyage of fourteen days that end in Barcelona, home port of their routes for the Mediterranean.

Bernie and the Blues Raise 2420 Euros for Cancer Research UK

Bernie Singleton from Cancer research UK recently teamed up with the Traveller Blues Band and The Clubhouse Restaurant and Bar in Los Gigantes to hold the first Cancer Research Event in Tenerife. The event was held on Wednesday the 2nd of March to raise awareness for the world’s biggest epidemic and disease. The latest statistics now show one in three people will suffer from the disease in some way, and we are still no closer to finding a cure. Cancer Research UK are raising money everyday to help through people like Bernie. They save thousands of lives

each year and now our tiny island of Tenerife has played a part to help the charity.

The Clubhouse Restaurant is located in El Caldera Los Gigantes, and they helped Bernie to organise and hold the even

t. The evening started with a champagne reception followed by food and live music. People came from all ends of the island to support the event, with coaches arriving none stop for the first hour. The venue was overflowing with residents and tourists all willing to help this valuable charity. Bernie had also been out gathering raffle prizes from local businesses such as The Sound of Musicals, Business Pages Tenerife, Dive centres, Jewellers, gift shops the list goes on and on, and a big thankyou was made over the mic to the local companies who

had given so generously. With the venue full and the champagne flowing it was time for the Traveller Blues Band to take stage. They also donated the gig and played a full three hours of Rock and blues entertaining the guests all evening.

The clubhouse had put together a buffet which looked fantastic, Nikki the chef had done a great job of the food, and everyone got feed as they danced around the quiche and chicken drummers. Bernie then held a short talk about Cancer research and the vital help the charity

needs to keep searching for a much needed cure.

Whiskey from the band then offered his original Cigar Box Guitar for auction which raised 250 Euros, before moving onto the raffle and other fund raising games. The prizes were fantastic, and people gave so generously throughout the evening the final figure raised was 2420 Euros.

Bernie was delighted with the turn out and the amount raised in just one evening, she was very thankful to everyone and we look forward to seeing her again next year. The Traveller Blues Band are now in talks with the local tourist board for an open air gig next year in aid of raising money for the Charity. Bernie Singleton will be involved and hopefully we can again show the world that Tenerife is more than just a quick getaway.

Cancer, is an ongoing fight, and is we get older I am sure you will agree it seems to become an outspoken word. 1 in 3 people will contract this disease in one form or another, and the fight for a cure still seems like an endless battle. We can all sit back and hope we don't get it, but that will not prevent or cure this. It needs people to get together and help to raise funds for the ongoing research needed to fight this disease.

If you live in Tenerife, or are on holiday on the 2nd of March, there is a fund raising evening is aid of Cancer Research UK. Bernie Stapleton, a registered fund raiser for Cancer Research UK will be on the island to raise awareness and compare the evening. The venue is located just out side of Los Gigantes, and is called The Clubhouse Restaurant & Bar, home to the Tenerife famous Traveller Blues Band who will also be playing to help raise much needed funds for this charity.

The Evening will start off with a Champagne reception on arrival, followed by an lots of fun and games to help raise money. The Clubhouse Restaurant & Bar Tenerife is a local retreat for Ex-pats and locals in Tenerife. You will find great food served with excellent service. The views from this hideaway are outstanding, both of the Island of Gomera at day, and the night sky at night. The venue itself is a well know LIVE music centre, hence it is a little out in the countryside, but still only 3-4 Euros in a Taxi from Los Gigantes. Just ask any Taxi driver to take you to the " Tag - i - naste" a word they are all familiar with and points the venue out to them. On arrival you will find a large car park, and amazing surroundings of the true Tenerife countryside. It is also a pleasant hike, if you have come on a Tenerife walking holiday, and a terrific Tenerife bike ride, if cycling.

All are welcome and you may even find the occasional Harley Davidson on the car park, as the ride from anywhere to this hidden sanctuary is amazing. Musicians use this venue as a local gathering on Sundays, with open mic sessions, and great food server all day. Christmas is an important time of year, many businesses can see this period as a time for gaining new sales and new customers. This is all very well and good, but the customers you have can easily be overlooked. I always see Christmas as a time to show my customers I care about their business, and their loyalty to mine. A small token of goodwill, can go a long way, I was taught this by my grandfather. He would at this time of year always take something to his customers, if you were really lucky it would be a bottle of spirits, but the expense of that would be far too high these days.

There are many ways you can show your existing customers you appreciate them, and would like to continue doing business with them in the future. A Christmas card, a bottle of wine, a box of chocolates anything that puts a smile, and a little Christmas cheer into them, will make a solid base for your business in the New Year. Local Band Have Worldwide Release with ITunes...

This small island in the middle of the Atlantic rarely sees local expats on the world wide stage. But local blues band Traveller are presently celebrating some fantastic news for them and the local music scene. Only yesterday they were informed that their debut single had been released by ITunes across its world wide network. Not only that but their producer and label had managed to get this single "The Crossing Roads" accepted by all major digital retailers across the world.This is a great step forward for the Traveller Blues Band but they have no ideas of jet setting off just yet.

The local Cabildo in Los Gigantes was also very impressed with the band, after they played the main stage and headlined the final day of events for Dia Del Tourismo. A full stadium danced into the night with familiar songs and well arranged classics from the like of Cat Stevens, Ralph McTell and many more.

The band are currently playing all over the Island and with their new hit, I am sure the journey has only just begun.

The Tajinaste restaurant can be found amongst the fabulous countryside, on the outskirts of Los Gigantes. The menu is average but the service very friendly and prompt.
The main attraction to this restaurant is the live blues band which play every Friday. Traveller is made up from very talented musicians, who begin with subtle cover music from well known artists such as Cat Steven's and Eric Clapton. The lead guitarist is very talented and plays a range of musical styles with original instruments. The Wessienborn guitar he plays has a haunting sound, which warms you as you relax to the rearranged well know songs from your childhood. As the evening progresses the lights begin to dim, and the whole place takes on a very bluesy feel, like what you would expect in the southern states of the USA. The whole place seems to light up when Whiskey, lead guitarist pulls out his Cigar-box, and really shakes the rafters. The harp player throws his soul into his instrument and the atmosphere steps to a whole new level. With well known blues tracks from Muddy Waters, BB king and many others the band transform an average evening into a night to be remembered. By midnight the whole place is rocking, and people of all ages shocking the dance floor.
Traveller are a band to see, and with the setting of the restaurant, and friendliness of the staff a night out at Tajinaste is a real adventure. I have also been told the Traveller blues band are now arranging a local bus service for people who do not wish to drive.
I have had many good nights listening to the fabulous live band, and enjoying the atmosphere of the whole restaurant.

An Evil night out! San Miguel Medieval Castle

The Medieval castle at San Miguel invited me down to review its evening entertainment last Saturday. With three young boys and a long summer holiday I was only too pleased to take their offer. I have been to the castle before, but my first son was really too young to enjoy the experience, now he is 9 years old, with two younger brothers, aged 5 and 6, the evening was a magical event that took them back to a time of gallant knights and noble kings.

The castle is situated in Aldea Blanca, San Miguel, the building itself is very authentic, and the whole setting as you arrive sparks a night to remember. We parked in the adequate car park, and as we climbed the steps were met by knights and horses. Obviously my children were delighted, and the step back in time had begun. As you enter the castle, it really is like stepping into a time machine, shinning armour, swords and brutal weaponry hang from the walls, with flags and authentic burning fires and lanterns. The whole set is very well designed, and everyone who enters gasps with delight as they venture around the halls. You are casually lead around the castle and get given your coloured bib and crown, then you must hold your tounge, as the count of San Miguel greets everyone of his guests whilst posing for a photo.(Although I did find it strange that we all had to be photographed indiviually, and what a waste of paper, there is more chance of one photo being purchased than 4 or 5 indiviual ones.) As you make your way to the arena, the setting continues to delight, with medieval ornaments and wall hangings. Into the arena, and its huge, bench seating is more than adequate with wine juice and water all part of the price. Slowly the arean fills up, and it becomes aparent what the bibs are for. Everyone is colour coded and the colour matches your Knight, for whom you must cheer and scream every time he needs your support.

The lights dim and the show begins with spectacular dance routines from horses, yes horses. The training and time this must take is amazing, they do not seem to put a foot out of place. This continues to amaze the crowds, and wine starts to flow, beer is also available from the local wench, who visits you in turn. Once the count has made his entrance the food begins to arrive, the children are given a tidy chicken and chips, all included in the price. The only let down for me was the adult meal, it is served with attitude, and casually thrown at you. I know we are at a medieval castle, I know its authentic, but we are not peasants. This with little expense could be hugely improved, and that's not just my opinion, if you look at the mountain of found they throw away its obvious this needs some attention! As the knights begin the games each coloured section cheers and screams as their hero wins points for the team. The end of the night sees some magnificent displays of sword fighting, realistic battles scenes, and fantastic horse riding skills. My children were truly amazed at the whole evening, it was breathtaking for them. I actually enjoyed just sitting and watching them, as their eyes lit with pure amazement.

If you are visiting Tenerife, and are looking for a fantastic way to spend an evening, then this is one of the best you can find. I rate it 41/2 out of 5 stars, it really is worth seeing. The entertainment is fantastic, and you can really appreciate the time and effort that goes into each performance.

Rock Story Returns!

I received an invitation last week to visit the new "Rock Story Tenerife Musical" a new fuller show, from the much respected VIANA Shows. The new venue is Exit palace, Junction 29 San Eugenio, just look for Siam Park and you will see the theatre at the entrance. I have always liked this venue, and have enjoyed many shows here. The present economic climate forced the Exit Palace dinner show to shut down, leaving the Exit Palace Tenerife vacant for a newbie.

Rock Story Tenerife combines three famous bands and a magnificent light show, with an added addition of dance routines and acrobats. The show now seems to come alive, and is in some places amazing. I really don´t want to say too much other than go and see it. The extra work they have put in will certainly pay off, and as word gets around I am sure this will be a huge success for them. The venue is comfortable, and seating in Exit Palace makes for a great show. You can see the stage from any angle (your eyes won´t leave it believe me). The extra lighting and thought they have put into effects makes the price of the ticket pennies for what you get. Drinks are reasonable, and table service at no extra cost just adds to the evenings enjoyment. As you all know, when I review a show like this I give you the facts and figures, on this one for the first time all I will say is this...

"Thank-you for a great evening of music and entertainment, I would recommend this show to everyone, and give it a full 5 stars, YOU MUST GO AND SEE IT!"

Living in Tenerife can try your patience on many occasions. It seems the word multi-task for many companies is very hard to understand. How many times have you walked into a business premiss and waited and waited until its was your turn, only to be intercepted via a telephone call to the cashier. This then goes on for hours whilst she or he explains how to find the store, over the phone.

In the times we find our companies and businesses facing, it seems obvious that the word multi task should be of most important to employers and employees, if you cant understand the term, then maybe its time for you to sack or be sacked. Its all about getting your hands dirty, that's my conclusion to recession.

When I am old, I mean really old, and my grandchildren look up and ask me "what was the great recession about grandpa?" I will reply, " It was about getting your hands dirty, rolling your sleeves up and multi tasking young one"

"What are else could you be doing, whilst you are reading this!"

Traveller - Tenerifes new sound!!

The latest craze to hit the Island is a new band called Traveller, they have a unique sound which cleverly mixes music and style creating an unforgettable energy I have not experienced before.

I did not really know what to expect when I was asked to come and watch this band. I have heard a lot of hype about them, but thought it all would blow over. Blow over is exactly what the band did to me. In fact it ran redbull through my veins for the whole night. The sound was amazing, the fusion of instruments and style makes this very hard to categorize, but as Whisky lead guitarist from the Band said "Its Traveller Rock, its the only way we can explain it". When you see the band Traveller, they almost look like an American southern rock band. But they play everything from Red Red Wine to the Rolling Stones. All in their unique traveller style, the original material they also play makes your heart pound, and there is not a foot in the building that's not tapping.

All I can say is more, more more, where are you guys playing again and can I stay all night...

The selection of instruments is amazing, blues Harp, Trumpets, and a strange guitar Whisky plays on his lap called a Weisenborn, this guitar cries, it kicks ass and then gently strokes your forehead. Traveller is certainly going to get people smiling, the whole building was dancing and screaming for more by the end of the night. And I must admit, I was one of them.

That still is my dream, my ambition, and my for ever lasting goal. Sometimes I have to reach inside to find it, but it is always still there, the reasons why and because, are all answered in my original dream.

Yes, it is a long headline, but its a frustrating one. It was valentines Day, so I did what every good husband should and took my wife out for a treat. I haven´t been down to the Safari centre for a while so I decided to take the family for a meal. Although it was Valentines day, it was also New Years day for the Chinese. This year is the prince of the jungle, the Tiger, and he must be in a very romantic mood. With all this happening, it had to be a Chinese Restaurant for a banquet. There are a few new ones now in the centre and they all look great, until you look at a Menu. OK I understand we are in recession, so lets put all the prices up? forgive me if I'm wrong, but I thought it would be the other way around. The first restaurant had got San Val (the wine not the day) priced at 9 Euros for a half bottle. I am sure this very wine is available in Mercadonna for 3.50 a full bottle? This makes the very same wine 18 Euros? Which is by any standards shocking. My assumption of this is that they must also be buying a 2 Euro cut of meat and selling it me for 20, well if this is how we are trying to impress the tourists its no wonder we have none.
The centre itself was like a ghost town, along with Los Cristianos, and I really think if people want people, they need to look at what they are selling and say "Would I be happy to pay this" most of the staff in the restaurants would say no, like you and like me. The owners must have a strange impression of tourists, they obviously think they come from another planet, and simply throw money around regardless.
If a company wants to survive, Im sure its better to be reasonable about pricing and please the customers with good food, good service and most importantly value for money.
Next bus to Bulgaria please....

Just a Lidl bit Longer

This month will see the new Lidl stores open their doors, and hopefully offer us all a new choice when it comes to supermarket shopping. The supermarket chain has grown considerably well across the UK, offering no frills products at great prices. The likes of Iceland and Mercadona will be against some strong competition if they get it right. I'm holding my breath though, well at least until the doors are open and products with prices on the shelves. Too many times have I waited in anticipation for newbies to arrive here, and then got let down. There must be a Tenerife triangle they pass through which ridiculously hikes the prices. Lets hope Lidl Tenerife get it right, and stick the right price on the right tin!
The new Lidl Tenerife stores are to be based in Las Chafiras, and Adeje, with more to follow across the Canaries. Local supermarket chains such as Mercadona and Hyperdino were furious when the chain finally got a foot hold. This being due to the creation of employment in the struggling economy. Its about time they had some strong competition, I have seen the prices steadily increase in the local supermarkets, so a new no frills brand will suit me fine.
The opening date is set for the 6th of February, but this is Tenerife, and it may take a Lidl bit Longer!

Finding the right toy for my children is difficult, they watch the Spanish TV and see the latest toys being advertised, but getting them here is extremely hard. I don´t know about you, but I feel we always seem to get the tail end of the retail market. What ever is "left over" or "didn't sell well enough" they seem to send it to the Canary Islands. I can hear them say "let the banana growers have them, they´ll be ecstatic".

Well its that time of year again, the goose is now a chicken, the Christmas tree now a mere twig, the tinsel aluminum foil cut into strips....... Christmas is what we make it, we can all sit around thinking about how hard it has been through the worlds worst financial crisis. We can all sit behind our counters and desks, watching the clock, waiting for the phone to ring, or the door to open. But the doors have locks, and we have keys, its just a matter of finding them. Christmas is what we make it, as is business, hard times and bad deals. The old saying "every dark cloud has a silver lining" is very true. There are always opputunities with any situation, but you wont find them under your desk, or in your pocket. You will have to go further afield, and search, may be even work a little harder, but the pot of gold is still there. It may have changed shape, currency or even colour, but its still there. As business owners we have to learn to adapt, change with our industries and learn new skills to develop our future. Simply sitting on our 20 Years in Tenerife statement will bring us nothing, we need to show people why we have survived, why we are still here and how we can provide, offer and sell our ideas. This time last year my blog was titled a "quest for survivors", I think we have found them, and we are all here to stay, now its time to tell our customers why. Carrefour or Care for?

I visited a store on Saturday, with the intention of purchasing a Wii console for my son. The store is usually great value, but this time I realized why shopping online is now taking huge steps, and traditional stores are closing down.
Let's start with the store, my son is fluent Spanish and knew exactly what he wanted, but me, having not researched the product entirely was in the hands of the store attendant.
We headed straight to the console counter, my sons money burning a hole in his pocket as usual. I have three children, and they seem to get good value for money out of their video games. But there is always a fight over controllers and turns etc, so I try to stick with two or three player games for them. That was my first question to the store attendant, I hadn´t looked at the Nintendo games before, and needed to know where it stated players, he pointed to the completely wrong area, and I was left to work this out for myself. We managed, but compared to an Internet store, I would have this information in front of me immediately. We picked up the console and needed to know how many controllers, I again grabbed a store assistant, who pointed out that it came with one. Now inside a Wii package is more than just a controller, you also need a motion sensor, I know, I was confused also. But the store assistant didn't tell me this, I found this out when I returned to my home, and reviewed it on the Internet.
So we plodded through, trying to select a game, but we couldn´t even take it out of the plastic security box to look at the manual, to check players or to research our product, and when we asked the store assistant, he didn't really know either. The point I'm trying to make here is simple, If I had been buying on the Internet, all this information would have been at hand, I would have found videos to check the graphics, reviews on the game play, information on what would be best for my childrens age group. All in front of me, when I asked Google, the best in store assistant in the world.
The most disappointing thing about our shopping trip was the store assistant advised us completely wrong, and going back to the motion senor, without it, you cannot play the two player games he had shown us, we could not play any two player games, because with out it, the second controller we purchased may as well prop the door open.
This is where Internet shopping is taking giant steps, Its time we started to learn from the Internet shopping experience, if we want our stores to survive. We need knowledge at the raise of a hand or the push of a button. I want a store assistant who can help, not who can check my 20 for a dud. You need your products to be thoroughly understood, your services to be above excellent, and your employees to be experienced in what you are selling.
The down fall with shopping online is the time factor, but If we learn to become patient and purchase in advance we will save money, save time, and mostly get what we want.

Rock Story Tenerife

Rock Story is Tenerife latest addition to the live music scene. It seems bands and live music acts are becoming very popular on the island, and Rock Story combines the settings of a hard rock cafe, with three styles of music for three different generations. Bptenerife went to check out the venue, and the sounds.. The location for Rock Story Tenerife is in the old Bingo hall, opposite the Ocean Palace in Fanabe. As you enter and take the steps you immediately feel a Hard rock setting. Signed guitars and memorabilia fill the walls of this huge venue. The decor has been picked out well, and a really classy rock theme produced throughout the club. Inside the venue the seating arrangements are a little strange, around the edge is lush settees and soft furnishings, in the middle of the floor are pop corn seats, which is the main seating area for the stage. To the rear of the room is a well dressed bar, with plenty of staff to serve you. Mind at this point I realized that you would need a small mortgage to get drunk, as three bottles of beer came to nearly 13 Euros. With the small heart attack out of the way, I found myself a comfortable seat around the edge of the room. Maybe it should be pointed out here, if you want people to sit and watch the band, then don´t make a second class seating area for it. You could see many people had been put in an awkward position, with the seating set up they had created. Teething problems I am sure, as when the first band appeared on stage, they took the roof off. The Beatles cover band were fantastic, they had the image, the guitars and even the Banta, I enjoyed them and they seemed to warm up the whole room. The second band The Wall, are a tribute to the amazing Pink Floyd, and a mixture of lights, projections and excellent musical skills recreate the whole place into a Floyd concert. It totally changed the atmosphere, and sucked people into the wall. A great band with excellent skills, many hours of practice must have gone into this fantastic set. We then went into a break, and I realized I had been there for nearly two hours. Time flies when you´re.... oh you now what I mean. The third tribute is Queen, with a great singer, and musicians to create a dazzling performance. I must say this band was my favorite, and really did seem to hit every note. It might have also been down to the fact I had broken into that second mortgage and had, had a few by now! To summarize the overall night, it is really worth going to see, but watch the prices of the drinks, and look out for ticket deals. Buying direct can be expensive, but you are paying for three bands. They are also professional musicians, and not a local knees up, what I am trying to say, is you get what you pay for. It's a shame the drinks inside are so expensive, I would rather pay alot for the ticket and get cheap drink, or vice versa, not both. Rock story Tenerife is a great night out, wether it will be here to stay is another story....

I received an invitation last week to visit the new"Rock Story Tenerife Musical" a new fuller show, from the much respected Rihanna Shows. The new venue is Exit palace, Junction 29 San Eugenio, just look forSiam park and you will see the theatre at the entrance. I have always liked this venue, and have enjoyed many shows here. The present economic climate forced the previous show to shut down, leaving the Exit Palace Tenerifevacant for a newbie.

If you´re ever down Fannabe, near to the McDonalds on the beach front, then check out the local band Sound Chaser. These three Venezuelans are a force to be reckoned with. Screaming guitar solos, fantastic rhythm and bass lines, and even a short drum solo to finish up. They are Tenerife’s number one rock band and really seem to be going places. They can be found every night playing live music, and creating an electric atmosphere at the IN and Out bar. Its surprising to see how many different types of people really enjoy this evening out. Even if you’re not a "rocker" this band will certainly entertain you. The guitarist, is at a professional level, and would certainly stand his own ground playing next to some greats. He has his own crisp tone and flows freely in and out of his scales to produce a uniqueness of his own. He is also the lead singer, and can hit the highs and lows of any screaming metal track. Sound Chaser seem to have got it right, the set up down there is amazing for a small band. They are obviously pumping the earnings back into their sound, and they certainly care about everyone enjoying themselves. I would be extremely surprised if anyone ever left this gig and said they didn´t have one of the best nights out for a long time. The bar itself is friendly, with great service, once your sat down you won´t have to move all-night as the waiters come to you. The drinks can be a little pricey, watch the shorts as they soon mount up. I have recently read that the Tenerife Government are now backing the band, and they will also be playing at the Swedfest, in Sweden next year. All I would like to say to Sound Chaser, is Thank you, for some great nights out, and entertaining my three young boys. They are memorized by the band, and look forward to them every time we go, I do believe the band even learnt a Slayer track for them, as they we constantly requesting it. A great band, a great night out, and something Tenerife has certainly got to be proud about.

Siam Park, more Cash than Splash

The school holidays can be a frustrating time for parents. Looking for ways to continue work and still keep the children out of mischief. My wife and I both work for the company, and have the three young boys to entertain in the process. Having a big family, can be an expensive day out when it comes to theme parks and tourist attractions. One of those exciting new attractions to the island is Siam Park, the water kingdom. Millions have been spent on this project, and plenty of hype has made it a must see for most people. We decided to visit the park and give our children aged 4, 5 and 7 a great day out. Entrance to the park cost us close to 100 Euros, its not cheap, but if they have got it right we wouldn´t need to spend anymore inside, apart from a drink and something to eat. This is still expensive, and we could do alot with 100 Euros, I can actually feed the family for a week here in Tenerife for the same amount. But it was not the time to grumble, and this was a family attraction, somewhere I could find sanctuary, relax and leave the children to play. As you arrive, you first need to buy parking, yes thats right, buy parking. I had just spent 100 Euros now I have to pay to park. I found this a bit shocking, after all it's not like I am going anywhere else. I can get a bus for free to the attraction, but if I save them the trouble, I get charged to park? With no choice, we entered the park and got hit by the usual photographer, something you get used to with attractions on the island. You don´t have to purchase the photo if you don´t want it, and guess what, it's not included in the admission price either. Once in the park, you are left to work it out, you will need a locker, you guessed it, you have to pay for it, again everyone will need one, so why not just included it in the admission price. Instead you have to wait in the queue, pay for you locker, leave a deposit, (incase you try and steal it) and then wait in the queue to get your deposit back. A long process which is a real pain.

After all that, you´re finally ready to experience the water kingdom. Armed with suntan cream and a towel we headed off. You are first met by the Floating Market, I big part of the advertising for Siam Park. I seem to remember reading "Authentic floating market on the lazy Thai river". Problem was there is no floating market anymore, it's gone, its now just a float- less market. As you slowly drift around the "authentic" river on a rubber ring. I don´t seem to remember the Thai doing that in Phuket, which is where it was apparently modeled on? OK so we went to get on, but we couldn´t, the two youngest were not big enough, so my eldest son could have gone on his own, or we could have left the others why we went and drifted around, but we came as a family, and decided we would go onto the next attraction. Here come the waves! the Wave Palace is certainly well designed, the waves are tremendous, and it must have some extremely good engineering to make the whole thing work. But unfortunately there is still a problem here, there are not enough beds and areas to sit. It seems this is a huge problem with the park as a whole. There are not enough places to sit, its great if you want to stand up and walk around all day. But the idea we got was a place to relax? unless you like relaxing standing up, (I found its very hard to do). So, can you leave the children here, not really, because our children are still young, and the waves are so fierce, this attraction is really for the young teenagers upwards, who I saw having some great fun. Ok lets find something for the kids!, we hit the Lost City, this is a great play area for them, very safe, and lots of fun, but what do the adults do? well we sit down of course and relax, leave the children to play where its safe don´t we? No, there are not enough seats or loungers. This is the only area designed for young children, there is no other attraction which will let a child under 110 cm. So every family that have been tricked into the marketing, and charged the same amount for their kids, are now trying to squeeze into this attraction. As you stand and bake in the sun, and try to smile everytime the kids wave, you become more and more frustrated with the young teenagers, and adults who have taken the seats and marked them with their towel. They then wonder off around the park, leaving all the parents of the young children to stand and work on their tans. This is a huge problem, and if you are visiting the park with young children GET THERE EARLY, else your day will be ruined. Standing and walking around finding height signs and telling the kids sorry, for 4-5 hours is no fun. The other rides, well who knows, the kids were not big enough, but had to pay the same price for admission, its a bit naughty really, and upsetting. We are residents here, and this project was partially funded by the government who we pay our taxes to. So its upsetting to feel the owners of the park are maxing every penny from it, and forgetting about value for money. And so it went on, people scrambling for seats at restaurants, and other places around the park, fighting over towels and deck chairs. So much planning has gone into the rides, but so little into the customer experience of the whole park. Presently I would encourage any young teenagers, or groups to go and enjoy the attractions, it is definitely value for money for that age group. They can use all of the rides, enjoy the whole park and will come back thrilled by the experience. But if you have a young family, I would advise you to wait until they are all over 110cm, you will then get some value for money. I was not the only unhappy customer, as I spoke with many people visiting the park and got some feedback (maybe something Siam Park staff should do). Some complained about the prices of everything in the park, but thats the usual theme park style, we've got you here so now lets get the maximum spend out of you. Many people did complain about the same things as I found though, advertised as a family day out but nothing for the young kids who still pay the same admission as a 15 year old. No chairs to sit down as they were all taken, and total chaos in the restaurants when trying to get a meal. So its definitely more cash than splash, and I think the owners of Siam Park should either re-think their pricing or invest in more younger attractions. And with the car parking money, buy a few more deck chairs.

For the last four weeks, I have been on the vans delivering around the island. It is shocking to see how many businesses once thriving have gone out of business. When we delivered the last Business Pages Tenerife directory, the island was a very different place. Businesses were still hanging in there, and making money. Now many have disappeared, bars empty, and restaurants serving UB40´s. As we pushed on delivering, it also dawned on me, that many of the businesses closed down, where the ones with attitudes. I remember delivering to so many places, who were so rude to us. A new product that they had never seen, and because they thought I was just the delivery guy, treated me with disrespect and bad manners. Just because I was jumping on and off a van, the owners of many businesses treated me as a second class citizen, not worthy of their intellectual personality. So in some ways it was also clear why these people had closed their doors, and why so many of these "I've been here for 20 years and know everything" people had gone out of business. Worlds change and so do Islands, business grows up, and so do people. Placing stake on amount of time spent in Tenerife, is hardly a just reason for dictating to people. Good on you if you have spent 20 years in the sun, what did you learn? are you prepared to share the information? or are you one of those arrogant types, who bullshit everyone, and rip them off in the process. Tenerife is changing, and a new generation of business owners are here. People who are prepared to help their fellow country men. People who are prepared to go that extra mile for your business, and its marketing. Business Pages Tenerife is here to stay, and is committed to helping your company survive. I walked into a store today, and asked the two Canarians behind the counter how much the BMX bike was in the window. The first looked up at me, and said nothing, the second squinted his eyes, and said ¿Que?
Now forgive me, I am living in Spain, along with 75´000 other expats living in the Canaries. My Spainish isn´t fluent, but I can get by. I asked "¿cuanto euros para esta bicicleta? and pointed, not outside to the road, not up at the sky, but belive it or not, at the actual item I weas intersted in purchasing. My son was also with me, who is fluent Spainsh, and just shook his head in disbelif. Now I have no patience, I don´t beleive in them, patience are what you need when standing in the que at the doctors, not when asking for a price, because you could well be about to give the store owner the money. But this sort of attitude spreads far and wide across the island. I have been in store after store, eaten meal after meal and received such bad service, it has been shocking. When a baby is born in england, and it drops onto the surgeons table, its first words are Thankyou doctor, as he cuts the umbilical cord. Why do the Canarian people refuse to use good manners, and offer such bad customer care. Isn´t it time they woke up from their bad dream, and began to act civilized towards its customers, towards its tourists, and towards its residents. Why should we put up with the Guanches! whom it seems have never passsed the grunting stage when meeting another human being. Im sorry if this post is straight to the point.... arhhh there I go again, using my manners, its just naturally breed into us. They cost nothing, but add them to a sentence and it becomes so much more friendleir, so much more inviting, and so much more business can be made from using them.
Wake up Tenerife.. Please.. and use your bloody manners!

Wheres the Culture!

Even in times of recession it seems the streets of Puerto de la Cruz are still bustling with life. After a few days holiday in the north I discovered it to be as enchanting as ever. We watched as the virgin Mary was paraded around the streets, as street performers uncovered their arts and children played in the warm sunlight. The streets were constantly full of people, and reminded me of Los Cristianos 10 years ago. When herds of tourists wondered adventitiously around the streets, simply enjoying the picturesque scenes. It doesn't take long to comprehend what is so different, once you begin to stroll around and take in the culture and passion for the North of Tenerife. It has history and its buildings are full of Spanish architect that walk you through generations of time. You can feel the influences of different cultures, in both the location, and the types of constructions and design. The south is built purely for lager louts and nightclubbers, unless you´re looking for a cheap camera, you can always find plenty of out of date electronic stores. The tourist for the island has changed, but the south´s mentality hasn´t. Stores, bars and restaurants still treat people with a lack of respect and customer service is non existent, as people continue to treat people like intoxicated 18 years olds. There is no culture in this area once brimming with tourism. The cheap fags are out of date, and the booze isn´t so cheap anymore. Unless you want to stand in a down and out bar for 1 Euro a pint. The problem is, the 1 Euro a pint tourist isn't here, hes in Bulgaria, and other eastern European countries, that are able to sell the beer for 50 cents. That tourist has gone, and judging by the droves in the North, we now have people looking for culture, wanting to experience the islands way of life, and see how Canarians live. The walkers we once laughed at branding their ski style walking sticks are the people we now need to learn more about. The south has fallen behind because it has little to offer now the Euro is strong. The cheap tourism has moved on, the young found new islands, and the genuine tourist opting for education, history and something new.

To attract the tourist back, we need to rebrand the south, move it away from the cheap Tenerife holiday, and bring back cultre and passion. Not a passion for larger, a passion for the beautifull place it really is. Under the nightclubs, the cheap restaurants, the fags, the booze is a beautifull undiscovered island. Masca, Fiestas around the small villiges, street parades, the culture is here, it just needs talking about.

A TV SHOW taught a Moray expat that switching his Spanish lifestyle for the north-east would lower his standard of living.

Kevin Isaac’s experience on the ITV programme – No Place Like Home – proved he would have a more contented lifestyle staying in Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

The 39-year-old left Elgin to work as a representative for a travel company.

For the past 20 years he has been settled in the Canary Islands, where he lives with his wife, Lindsay, and his two daughters, Isabel, 4, and Annabel, 2.

More recently, however, the self-employed comedy Elvis impersonator has been to his family back in the UK.

He said: “My daughter goes to university in Aberdeen and my mother’s been in and out of hospital with health problems, and we’re not getting to see much of them living abroad.

“The programme showed you what your life would be like if you went back.”

Mr Isaac spent two weeks in the UK followed by a film crew as researchers helped him to realise what the Canary Islands could offer him and his family if they opted to change their lifestyle.

But at the end of the filming he decided that Spain offered him the better lifestyle.

Mr Isaac said: “It just seems that I can’t do in Elgin what I can do in Spain.

“To continue my business I would have to travel up and down the country to holiday parks.

“Staying in Spain is no holiday. It’s real life, but I can still make a living and my daughters enjoy life here, so we’ve decided we’ll stay.”

Mr Isaac’s parents, Kenneth and Isabel, live at Maisondieu Place at Elgin.

He has three brothers, Ian, who lives in Aberdeenshire; Duncan, who lives at McDonald Drive, Lossiemouth; and Gary, who lives in the Scottish Borders.

Plain bad Business

Why is it in Tenerife when you want something, it always costs more, and you never get exactly what you want. Let's take Indian restaurants for example, if I order a Shami kebab, I expect a minced lamb sort of spicy burger, not a minced chicken kebab with spices. Is it me, or are lamb and chicken two totally different meats. And these places wonder why they are closing down, they offer poor menus and terrible service. Back in the days when Tenerife was the place to holiday, you could get away with this. If a man stood to complain at a restaurant table, another family would bustle him out of the way to nick it. Everyone was so full of sangria, they didn´t know a big mac from a Shami kebab, never mind what meat was in it. The walkways would be full of people hovering around like flies, from one stool to another, trying desperately to shed a few of their worthless Euro´s. The pound was trading at the top of the currency volcano, and the Euro was the place to shop. Tenerife and the Canary Islands even more so, cheap fags, cheap booze, and many cloth-less women hovering around in a cocktail blur. Unfortunately those days are gone, but us, the business owners are still here. So what can we learn from the Shami kebab, what can we do in this bottoming out period of reseccion to improve our sales?. Well it's not going to take a rocket scientist to work this out. Just take five minutes and write down all the things you hate about other businesses in Tenerife. What they don´t do for you,what they could do better, and what you aren't getting. These are the things that we should all be improving. Then I have a second question for you, what are you offering, that can save people money? In times of reseccion, people need to save, or need an excuse to buy. Giving people that excuse is what turns your marketing messages into cash. Let's take shopping for clothes as an instance. Everyone one loves to shop for clothes, but in times of reseccion, we need another reason. If I am offering two shirts for one, thats a real good reason to purchase. If I´m offering 50% sale on old stock, in my store, I´m giving you a reason to shop. These are the reasons people will buy, simply trying to sit it out, will see your stock slowly dwindle from the shelf, and cash flow to only cover the bills. Leaving you with no stock, no money and no business

.Coupons, discounts, two for one, sales, it goes on and on. There are many people out there ready to buy, you have just got to give them a reason.

Extreme Fishing with Serenity

Free from stress and all anxiety is exactly what you will feel, when taking a trip out on Serenity. The Big Game fishing trip available in the San Miguel marina, is a great day out on the water, accompanied by Eugene, Jim and Imelda.
I arrived down in the marina around 11am, fully sunblocked and ready to fight a shark. My eldest son came along with me after a week worth of Robson Greens fishing shows on Channel 5. His enthusiasm for fishing is extreme to say the least. We found the boat Serenity moored the far end of the marina, just before the Submarine. This was handy, as the coffee shop is a walk away and allows you to get set for your day out. Eugene and his partner Imelda met us, and were very easy to get along with. Both from Dublin, and both keen fishers with warm personalities. They made us feel extremely welcome and talked us through the rigs and equipment on board. My son beat me to the chair, and strapped himself in ready for his first fight. Jimmy the skipper cast off and we headed out to sea.
The marina in San Miguel has really come on, its plesant and peaceful, well built and has a great feel to the place. The fish farms have been moved out, and just the views of the golf course, and shore lines remain. It seems to be a much pleasenter place, compared to the commercial feel of Puerto Colon.
The water was pretty calm, and as we headed out Eugene began to release the lines and set up the outriggers. The equipment was all top class, with rods and reels for both bottom fishing and trawling. In Eugene's words "We go out to fish, not to cash in" and I fully understand him, after taking several trips out before with other excursions, we have been left many times baking in the sun, without even touching a rod. And then after many hours of trawling and not catching, taken back to shore with a shrug of shoulders and a grunt. Eugene and Imelda are keen to make sure you catch, even if it's only a trace of mackerel, they are passionate about making their trip a rememberable one for every passenger.
We pleasantly headed towards Los Cristianos, and hit an amazing surround of dolphins, zipping and spinning around the boat. It always makes a great trip when you see these creatures in all their glory. They are amazingly fast, and certainly seem to control the waves as they ride them. Next was the turtles, flapping their way out to sea, they don't look as confident as the dolphins, but were a pleasure to see in the wild.
As we waited for a line to run, we took in the sea air and Imelda brought out a prepared sandwich and drink for us both. The Irish are always great as hosts, and we enjoyed each others company, all waiting eagerly for the zip of a reel.
Once passed the small harbor of La Caleta, we decided to try some bottom fishing, and dropped in some lines. For those who don't want to touch the bait, Eugene will rig up for you, and get you going. My son caught the first fish of the day, and we help him to pull up a king mackerel, this made his day, he had caught something, I knew he would be happy. He was positive there had been a bigger fish on the line, and I agreed, after all a seven year old pulling up a mackerel could have felt like a shark.
We began to head in and again the trawling lines went out, eight in total, with some huge lures and traces. Big game fishing is certainly what Eugene does, and his boat and tackle spell it out.
As we waited patently for the reels to snap, the skipper fought the waves. Going towards San Miguel seemed to be a fight, as the wind had picked up and waves were fierce. I took a seat and began to nod off against the tow and fro of the boat. You can easily drift into a deep daydream, and time passes by so quickly. Then came a huge scream of line, the elastic on the rig snapped and we were in. The skipper jolted the boat forward for a split second and then came shouts all round. The line continued to scream, as Eugene quickly got the other gear in. I took the chair, and the fight was on. Eugene's experience shone through and he talked me through the fight, slowly wearing the fish down. As I pumped the rod, and slowly drew the fish in, my arms began to wear out. It was a good 20 minutes before we had a show, and Eugene seemed to think it was a Bonito, I kind of small Tuna. But we will never know, as the hook came free, and on my final heave it was gone. I was gutted, and my son, well what can I say. You can imagine, all the way home he was explaing to me how I should have done it.
Anyway, I big thankyou to Serenity and its crew from bptenerife, a great value for money trip, with great company and sport.

And the Animals Came on Two by Two...

I have never seen a full animal circus before, and I was astonished when I visited the World Touring State Circus currently visiting Santa Cruz.
I was brought up to belive that it was cruel for the animals to be kept in such conditions, but I did not see any unhealthy animals, nor unhappy. No animals were under any kind of stress or force, and all the entertainers seemed completely at ease.
It was the thought of the animals that delighted me and my family, and we travelled excitedly to the North in search of the Great State circus. You cannot miss it, if you stick to the port road, and continue into Santa Cruz towards the Auditorium. The sight of the big top in all its splendor greets every spectator as they drive into the capital.
We parked very easily, for a change, and were able to purchase our tickets from the ticket office next to the bigtop. 12 Euro for children and 15 Euro for Adults, which wasn't too bad, especially considering it was close to a 2 hour show. As we were led to our seats, the show had already started, with Indian tigers, rolling around the bigtop. The lioness in all her glory sat proudly on her stool while the trainers performed fantastic acts with her cousins. Next she leaped from her position, and danced with the trainer before leading the tigers out from the stage. Then the lights drew down as the white lion, magnificently took command. This animal was huge, and the only word to describe it is awesome. He jumped on to his pedestal, as it twirled in front of the bigtop crowd. How they manage to tame such a creature is amazing, although I didn't see any heads between its jaws, so maybe he wasn't that trusting after all.
Next came the bears, which I was a little hesitate about. I remember as a Child seeing them in turkey, with rings piercing their noses, and chains being tugged to make them dance. These bears bore no chains, no piecing and only a light muzzle. They danced and performed with what seemed to be smiles on their faces, and the bigtop roared (excuse the pun, i couldn't help that one!)
The show went on and on, trapeze artists, wildhorses, crazy motorbikes zipping with sparks and fire around the inside of a ball type cage. This was entertainment in a league of its own, it was exciting, daring and amazing. To top the show, they proudly lead in 6 20 ton Indian elephants, my children's mouth's were so wide, they had been amazed but this was too much!
How can they train these animals to perform such acts, the elephants eyes were laughing as they rolled around the floor, and performed their show. And their show it was, the crowd was overwhelmed, and applauded for what seemed like hours. The clowns were of course also on and off for the whole show, helping to distract an amazed audience while sets were arrange.
If you are looking for a good show, then get yourself to the Circus, before it leaves. Its value for money, a great day out, and an amazing show.
Two shows per day 4.30 and PM, but get there early to get your tickets.

Does your food bill seem to grow without fail each week? Then follow these eight simple BPTenerife shopping tips to help bring it back down to earth! I'm not even going to tell you how much my wife and I spend on food each week because it's an utterly ridiculous amount of money for 5 people to spend! Maybe I am just a greedy pig and enjoy my food too much. But what I can tell you is that if I didn't have to eat, I'd be a lot richer! According to Mercadonna the average cost of a basket of 24 staple grocery items has increased by 18%* over the last year. And at a time when we all need to cut back on spending, that's not what we want to hear. So that's why I have come up with eight top tips to help you bring your food bill down to a more digestible size.

1) Plan ahead Think about what meals you're going to have in advance and plan your shopping list around that. When you're at the supermarket, stick to what's on the list. That way you'll avoid impulse buying and you'll only purchase what you need.

2) Look out for special offers Keep an eye out for any special offers at your local supermarket. Most supermarkets' web sites will advertise special offers so you can find out what's available before stepping into the supermarket itself. Make the most of these offers when you can and freeze whatever you don't need immediately (providing it's freezable of course). If you shop towards the end of the day, you're also more likely to be able to take advantage of the 'reduced to clear' shelf. Be wary of 'buy one get one free' deals, however, as they don't always offer good value for money -- particularly if they're on perishable items. You could end up buying more than you need and then throwing some out. To combat this, you could go shopping with a friend (providing you can agree on the BOGOF offers!).

3) Bin the big brands! We seem to be automatically programmed to associate the big brand names with better quality (or perhaps it's all just down to advertising). But supermarket's own label products like Hacienda can taste just as good and cost a lot less! 'Value' items can also be great for basics such as flour, sugar and rice -- you probably won't notice any difference in the taste. But for other items you might be better off paying a little more for a standard brand. Washing up liquid, for example, can be so low quality that you end up using more than you would do with a standard brand.

4) Avoid pre-packaged food If it's possible, try to buy food that isn't wrapped up in loads of packaging as it'll be cheaper. Buy your fruit and veg loose, and also purchase more from the deli counter -- cheeses and meats are likely to be cheaper here than those wrapped up in plastic on the shelves. It will also taste fresher.

5) Shop online Shopping online is also likely to make you more disciplined at only buying what you need. Rather than being tempted to buy items you see on the supermarket shelf, you're more likely to stick to your shopping list!

6) Don´t go Hungry! Shopping on an empty stomach, can be expensive. Seeing all the things you could eat right now, can lead o a basket full of junk. Take my advice and shop AFTER your meal.

7) Cheaper fruit and veg If you want to eat healthily for less, farmers' markets can be a great place to buy fruit and veg. They offer good quality food at supermarket-beating prices. There is a farmer market every Friday Saturday and Sunday, next to the fire station in Las Chafiras, Tenerife Alternatively, you could try to grow your own.

8) Watch out for supermarket scams! Supermarkets will do anything to try to get you to buy more than you really need. So keep your eyes peeled for these cunning tricks: • Store additions -- many of the larger supermarkets now have a café or a Tapas bar attached to them. These encourage you to spend far more time at the supermarket as well as far more money. • Store layout -- ever gone into your local supermarket to find that all the aisles have switched round and you can't find anything? I suspect this is a sneaky trick to confuse you so that you spend more time wandering around passing items that might tempt you. • Delicious smells -- the smell of freshly baked bread wafting down the aisle gets me every time. It's a great way to tempt you into buying some. • Product placement -- cheaper items will often be at the very bottom or top of the shelf, while the more profitable items are placed at eye level so it's those you see first -- so you'll need to hunt around for the bargains. Similarly, more expensive items, such as electricals, are likely to be nearer the entrance so that you have to pass them to get to what you really want. So there you have it -- eight top tips which will hopefully help to reduce your food bill! Happy eating!

We´re all going on a Yellow Submarine!

If you have been down to the new marina at Amarilla Golf, you will see the heavy improvements they have made. The all new marina, has been well set out, and is now filling up with some great looking watercraft, and theres even a yellow submarine.
Submarine Safaris have been operating their excursion for about the passed 12mths, and it seems to be getting more and more popular. All ages are experiencing the underwater world without a snorkel in sight. We decided to take a trip down to the harbor and find out what all the fuss was about.
We arrived at the marina, around 11.45, and had booked onto the 12pm dive. I had my three children with me, who were very excited about the whole experience. There is a pleasant cafe-bar where you can wait for the sub, and take in the views of the harbor. The staff and safari team, do their best to welcome you, and prepare you for the trip. The submarine arrived on time, and we watched inquisitively with the children as it docked along side. We all began to feel anxious at this stage, it was all getting very exciting. As the submarine staff helped off its passengers, we began to que, holding one another by the hand, with our imaginations running wild.
First its the photo, which is included in the trip, and a great way to remember the experience. Then down the porthole, and into the submarine. This was a little tricky with the children, and a bit more help would have been well appreciated, but we managed to get on and sat contently infront of our very own underwater world.
As the rest of our party boarded, we sat and watched the marine life flicker passed our windows. The children were in a world of there own, with faces frozen and eyes like saucers. The boarding doors were firmly closed, and we were then greeted by our guide. As the Sub began to move, it was very hard to figure out exactly which way you were heading, the help of a small TV screen under your window, allowed you to view the world from above. It is a very gentle experience, and there are no sudden drops or movements. The guide is extremely encyclopedic about marine life, and talks you through every passing life form. Once we were fully submerged, it wasn´t long before we reached some small sunken boats, and an underwater world. The submarine safari team even send down divers to perform a spectacular live show, with full size stingrays, feeding them infront on your marine window.
The whole trip was a great experience, and the children were thrilled with the whole trip. Tenerife has some great attractions, but this is definalty one to beat. Not only is the whole trip great value, but it's a once in a lifetime adventure, only to be had from Submarine safaris and the island of Tenerife.

A Quest for the Surviviors

Welcome to the New Year of 2009, but what can we expect from this New Year and new beginning?. We could sit back and continue to listen to the media sharks, hacking huge lumps of meat out of the credit crunch and turning it into a fatal Crisis. We could start counting our pennies, withdrawing our cash, and start to build air raid shelters to protect us from the falling financial blocks of the world. This is exactly what the media want to see, it gives them more news. When people become desperate, they do crazy things, crazy things make front page headlines for the largest newspapers of the world. Why shouldn't they fuel the worst financial disaster since the wall street crash of the late 1920's. Before long we should be reading about great depressions, and prohibition shouldn't we?
The future is what we determine it to be, suddenly everyone understands stocks and shares, they are all concerned by the price of oil, yet they have never bought a barrel, so why do we care?. We care about the price of petrol at the pump, we care about the price of food in the supermarket, we care for today, and we care for tomorrow, and if we have enough money to get us through the next two days, then we can deal with the next two thereafter.
We have all become financial extremists over the last 12mths, and we all have become wild gypsy's reading crystal balls.
The truth is, nobody knows what the recession will hold, but if you are ready for a challenge, then there is one right in front of you for 2009. According to a Harris Interactive survey for RetailMeNot.com, 45% of US online adults plan to spend less money on gifts this holiday season than last because of the state of the economy, while one in five plan to spend significantly less. 89% of online adults think coupons are a great way to save money, and 35% of those who will be spending less money on gifts this holiday season will use coupons, the study found.

Network Meeting Stronger Than Ever!

The BPBA Network meeting took place on the 17th October, and was the most interesting meet of the year. With over 50 attendees, representing around 40 companies, there were plenty of people to meet and introduce your company too.
This meeting welcomed its first "Guest Speaker", who gave a very interesting speech. Rainer Kirchner is a professional economist, and offered us his views for the future. It made for interesting thought, and I think many businesses will have gone away with the idea of a reform to their current business plan. Although the gap in Tenerife seems to always be filled with a new community of tourists and residents, our eyes were opened to the future economy and how best to prepare for its changes. Simply sitting tight and hoping for the best will not benefit your business, and as Rainer informed us, we must prepare for a rough time, and changing market.
We also opened the floor and gave everyone the chance to speak and introduce their business to the room. This helped the networking tremendously, and saved valuable time when approaching potential clients.
The Business presentation was conducted by Mike from Direct Telecom, he also had some great business incentives for fellow attendees. His presentation offered some great ways to save money within our own companies offering us some excellent products they now have on offer.
This was by far the best and most informative meeting of the year, and Business Pages Tenerife would like to thank all of the attendees. The next meeting will be planned for January 2009, to coincide with the release of our new directory. Knowing Your Online Customer

If you have an online business, you may want to consider these recently collected figures, about your customers.

A poll recently released by the Consumer Reports National Research Center shows that 82% of consumers are concerned about their credit card numbers being stolen online, while 72% are concerned that their online behaviors were being tracked and profiled by companies.

Although 68% of consumers have provided personal information in order to access a website, 53% are uncomfortable with internet companies using their email content or browsing history to send relevant ads, and 54% are uncomfortable with third parties collecting information about their online behavior.

The poll revealed that 93% of Americans think internet companies should always ask for permission before using personal information, and 72% want the right to opt out when companies track their online behavior.

Joel Kelsey, policy analyst with Consumers Union, said "Americans are clearly concerned... the vast majority of consumers want more control over their personal information online... "

The poll shows that consumers are trying to take steps to limit the information that is being collected and shared about them online. For example:

* 35% use alternate email addresses to avoid providing real information
* 26% have used software that hides their identity
* 25% have provided fake information to access a website

Consumers are aware that information about their surfing habits is being collected online, but many are not aware of what companies are able to do with their information. Among the other findings of the poll:

* 61% are confident that what they do online is private and not shared without their permission
* 57% incorrectly believe that companies must identify themselves and indicate why they are collecting data and whether they intend to share it with other organizations
* 48% incorrectly believe their consent is required for companies to use the personal information they collect from online activities
* 43% incorrectly believe a court order is required to monitor activities online

Kelsey concludes that "Many consumers have misconceptions about the information available about them and how commonly it is sold by companies without their knowledge..."

As our economy like the rest of the western world struggles through the credit crunch, we all need to learn the power of local business meetings and networking. A very productive way in which we can all spread our business messages through the local community. I always ensure I take a card from them, and write down a little note about the conversation I have had with the person who gave it to me. This way, when I return to my office, I can send some personal emails thanking them for their time, and talking with me, adding the personal touch with the use of my notes.
Selling yourself in this way creates a fantastic business aura about you, people like to do business with people they like, so the more people you get to like you in the network meetings, there more people who will do business with you in the future.
There is only one letter that is different between Networking and Not-working and that is the letter E, I believe this letter should stand for Enthusiasm, which is the first thing you should bring with you to a business Network meeting. This along with a pen and plenty of business cards could see you on your way to new sales and new business colleagues generating sales for you.

I have just spent a weeks holiday around the island, and used Secret Tenerife everyday, having three young children, it can become very expensive if we don't carefully consider our choices. I have been caught up many times on expensive excursions, and treated like cattle once trapped inside their cages. Holidays in Tenerife can be a very pleasant experience and great value for money with a little research.
The website will also keep you informed of the local activities that are about to happen, and not after they have happened, (which in Tenerife is a common thing to find). Newspapers are always full of events that were so exciting two weeks ago, and nothing about the week ahead. Most of the problem is they are only available every two weeks, with last weeks news. But hey! who needs newspapers, Seceret Tenerife even offer an email service, that will keep you upto date on virtually a daily basis.
Now many companies send out what we call "junk Mail" and it can become annoying. But can I also mention here, that the newsletters you receive from Secret Tenerife, are informative, and a great source of information. They have helped me to plan ahead, and my whole family looks forward to great weekends spent around the island, experiencing the cultures and traditions of Tenerife.

The Pink Wall

I am often looking for something different, especially where nights out are concerned. Being a family man residing in Tenerife, it can be difficult to find places to go where you can relax with the children, and all be entertained. Although many people will say that Tenerife is a child friendly island, there is little if anything to do with them of an evening. Unless that is they all like sitting and watching mom and dad down a few pops. I have three children, of a young age, and keeping them still for longer than 5 minutes is extremely difficult, that is unless you have a Pink Floyd tribute band playing in front of them, with an extremely good light and visual show, to keep them occupied.

The Pink Wall are a new attraction to the island, and you can find them playing Monday to Thursday at the Decades bar Pleasure Island. We had heard about the band and the light show from various sources, and decided to take a look, we phoned first to make sure kids were welcome, and they are more than happy to allow them in. The venue itself is very cosy, and once we were shown to our seats, felt very snug. The seating could do with a little more comfort but you can’t have everything.

You do pay on the door to watch this band, but we found it to be very reasonable, and the drinks once inside were not expensive. Children enter free of charge which helps the night stay within a good budget if you’re a family. Once you’re seated, you won’t have to move as the drinks are brought to your table. A great attitude from the waiters, and all the staff involved creates a great atmosphere inside.

The band begins around 10pm and the light show is fantastic for such a small venue, they have projected music videos on stage which really help the set along, and are great entertainment. If you are a Pink Floyd fan, it becomes a real blast from the past, and reminds you of those, well let’s say, less concerning days.

The band themselves, are great musicians, and play perfectly in the Floyd style, with a female vocalist who was extremely talented. It was a shame the female keyboard player was so tucked away behind the set, but with so much visual effects going on around you, they just don’t have the room.

If you are looking for a great night out, or some new entertainment on the island, I recommend you check them out, they are well worth seeing. You really do need to have some knowledge of Floyd though, and understand of the music and its origins.

I would give this 8 out of 10, and wish them all the very best with the act, I see more and more live music and tribute acts appearing, and hopefully will get to see them all. You can’t beat a live performance, from good musicians. Add a theme to it, and you have a spectacular night out for the whole family, just like The Pink Wall

Its no lie to say there must be over 5000 restaurants in Tenerife, some good and many bad. Finding a good place to eat on the island can be hit and miss. There are many "Good looking restaurants" but service, presentation and attitude can fall foul to many of them. Eating good food, is my specialty, I love it and I can probably bet you do too. Its what every human being is good at, we all have excellent pallets and we all know a good dish when we see, smell and taste one. A restaurant in Tenerife can present itself well, but the waiters and service must also be top class to win my vote (unless I'm eating out in a local bar and expect a local bar meal). I find in Tenerife, you can certainly not go by price, the most expensive restaurant is not necessarily the best, as with the wines. It is all about establishment, recommendations and proof in the pudding.
